About

Since childhood, my passion has been understanding math and how the world works. My mom inspired this growing up, being my teacher, and even having phone calls so we could practice arithmetic together. In high school, I had my wisdom teeth pulled out, which is only significant because it kept me indoors with nothing to do. Coincidentally, sitting at home with bleeding gums was when I began learning about C++ programming (thanks to YouTube). I expected to become a computer engineer and enrolled in those classes at university. In order to satisfy my passions for math and physics, I added those as majors as well. Upon realizing my true interest with computers was with the algorithms (not hardware), I transitioned the computer engineering degree to computer science. The value in this combination to me, given what I do now, is that physics provides a lot of intuition/interpretation for more abstract problems, math provides the technical language and rigorous tool kit, and computer science provides the software tool kit and knowledge for practical considerations during implementation. After many long nights and overloaded quarters, I graduated and moved to Los Angeles, the place I now call home.

Applied mathematics has become my niche, focusing on algorithms for large scale optimization algorithms. Little did I know where this would lead, now working on algorithms for solving big data problems, which have gained interest with the rise of machine learning. Thanks to several mentors that all provided crucial guidance along the way, I am now nearing the end of my time at UCLA and looking to move into a full-time research position.

Outside of research, one can find me running, surfing, and occasionally slacklining (pictured).
